"garden spider, (Araneus diadematus), also called cross spider, a member of the orb weaver family Araneidae (order Araneida) characterized by white marks arranged in the form of a cross on the abdomen. A fairly common species, the garden spider occurs throughout the Northern Hemisphere and is often found in grassy areas and gardens, where it builds an orb-shaped web on low shrubs. During the day the spider remains in the centre of its web, head downward."
